Twin flashes tend to offer similar features to a ring flash, but these provide two concentric rings. Thus they give much better illumination. In case event the hot shoe mounted flash is not sufficient, the hammerhead type of camera flash gun may have to be used. This will provide better illumination as well as better angle adaptability too.
A flash gun refers to an essential accessory for taking pictures after dark. It can also be surprisingly useful during the daylight. Many cameras, including SLRs, have a built-in flash unit. Thus the photographer will no longer have to make the decision to pack the gun separately. But for after-dark photography, the miniature tubes are rarely powerful enough. Nor are they correctly situated for providing great results. The gun provides a harsh lighting with strong shadows. It can create the additional problem of 'red-eye'.
A supplementary flash gun, on the other hand can be positioned so that the subject gets lit from an angle. The unit can be mounted on a bracket to the side of the camera. Or else the gun can be mounted by angling the head upwards so that the light bounces off the ceiling or purpose-built reflector. Separate gun can also be fitted with devices to soften the light, in order to provide more natural- looking results.
The built-in flash gun really proves itself useful during daylight. The exposure for fill-in flash gets handled automatically. This helps to avoid the complex calculations that were once necessary with bolt-on units. A fill-in flash is useful in many lighting situations.
