Question regarding tripod heads and hot shoe adaptors?
I was having a look through my parents attic and found a tripod. I'm quite keen to use it as it seems to be very well constructed and my old tripod is literally on its last legs. However, there is no screw that goes through the tripod head and attaches to the bottom of the camera to hold it firmly in place. There is just an L-shaped hole. Would something like this solve my problem?

No that link is to mount a flash unit onto a tripod!!
The L shaped hole you describe is probably where there was a quick release plate on the top of the tripod.
With your old tripod, you screwed the camera directly to it, yes? With the one you've found (& most more expensive tripods) there is a quick release plate which screws onto the bottom of the camera & is designed to stay there semi-permanently. It then attaches & releases to the tripod with a lever, to avoid having to unscrew the camera each time.
I suspect the quick release plate for the tripod you found is still on the bottom of a camera somewhere!
