This flash terminology guide will give a brief overview of the various terms and idea used commonly with respect to the Canon EOS flash photography.
Strobe and Flash.
The words flash and strobe has been used interchangeably actually to denote the same thing. It all depends on whether you are saying it the British or American way. The American refers strobe as a flash unit whereas the British uses the term to refer to anything which produces blinking lights. Speedlight and Speedlite are also two commonly used terms which create some confusion among those new in the photographic world. Speedlite is actually the brand name for Canon series of flash units while Speedlight is the brand name of Nikon series of flashes.
Guide Number
The maximum distance which a flash unit can reach with its flash pulse is known as the guide number. But if you are using automatic flash metering, this number is not important at all. You will only need to know this number when you are more inclined to do manual settings for your flash.
Exposure value (EV)
Used for determining the sensitivity of the Auto Focus or (AF) system or exposure metering for film types or a lens, the EV or Exposure Value is a combination of both Aperture settings and Shutter speed. The numbers 1/125 and F2 give an EV value of 9 which can also be obtained from F4 and 1/30.
Dedicated and Non Dedicated Flash Units
Dedicated flash units are flash units designed by the Camera manufacturers for their own range of cameras. These flash units can communicate with the camera system allowing for more precision photography. For example Canon manufactured the "speedlite" range of flash units for their EOS cameras. Non dedicated flash units are those flash units usually manufactured by third party manufactures. They normally work the same way on all brands of camera with little or no communications with the camera unit itself.
Shoe Mount
Usually located on the top mirror or prism housing, the shoe mount is a slide-in rectangular socket meant for attaching an external flash unit to the camera. They are also known as "Hot Shoe Mount" as they possess an electrical circuit which will initiate the flash unit once it is attached to the camera. Canon EOS cameras have an additional four electrical points in the shoe mount which transmit data from the flash trigger.
Redeye Effect
The redeye effect is a common problem in flash photography. This is a result of flash light which is reflected back into the camera after it bounces off the retinas of the eyes which is lined with red blood vessels. Usually it occurs when the low ambient light cause the pupils of the eyes to dilate bigger to let more light enter the eyes.
Redeye Reduction
To circumvent around the problem of redeye effect, there are several ways to go about this. One effective way is to move the flash away from the lens or reflect the flash light off the walls onto the subject instead of directly illuminating the subject. Another way is to get the subject to view a bright light just before taking the picture of the subject. This causes the pupils of the eyes to dilate smaller and therefore decreasing the reflective effect of the retina.

what do you need to connect a canon speedlite 450ex ii flash to a canon rebel xsi wirelessly on a stand?
i have a canon rebel xsi, just got a canon speedlite 450ex ii and i purchased a light stand, and i was wondering what parts i would need to make the flash wireless, and would that adapter to make it wireless connect to a flash stand? and also, what is a good, cheap wireless adapter for the flash.
In the wireless world, cheap is another way of saying "less reliable". These are not bad, but you need to put up with some occassional misfires on the flash.

They have a decent wireless setup that will not cost an arm and a leg. You will need a bracket that connecte the light stand to the receiver / flash. Here is one on eBay. It is all plastic and not too rugged - I think there are better on eBay but don't see them right now.

Finally, with this type of wireless setup, you need to set the power output on your flash manually (I'm hoping you mean 430EX II - which has manual power settings - I'm not familiar with a 450ex ). It is no longer a dedicated flash in this setup, and you will need to learn how to use your camera in M mode - manual exposure mode (not P, green box, Portrait, Av etc - only M).
