Two questions about my Canon Xti digital SLR?
1. I got the 18-55mm lens that came with the kit. I'm going to Japan soon and would like to buy another lens when I'm out there. What size or type of lens would be good for a secondary one? I don't know much about photography yet, and would like something that will allow me to take different photos than the 18-55mm.
2. When I'm shooting in full automatic, there are many different choices for photo size. Right now I have it set on the quarter cirlce L. There is also something with a staircase looking thing followed by an L. What are the difference between these two? I'm assuming they are both JPEG, but I want to shoot in the largest/best quality for fully auto. I will be shooting JPEG+RAW for manual.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money, and get a good starter "prime" lens, I'd suggest the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 lens... it's about $80.00 dollars, and is an excellent lens to learn on. 50mm is the "normal" view. Great for landscapes, and poitraits. The speed of the lens (1.8) is excellent for poitraits and for macro, close up photography. It's a nice sharp lens.. Also it is lightweight and compact.
If you want a longer lens, as a general "walk around" lens, I'd suggest the Canon EF 24-105L .. it's a bit expensive, but well worth the price. For about half the cost of the 24-105L you can get the Canon EF 28-135 IS USM lens... the IS makes it quite useable in lower light, and the focal length is excellent. It compares favorably to the "L" series of lenses.
2. I shoot strictly in RAW, and convert to Tiff and Jpg in post production. The RAW files hold more detail, than jpg images do, and you'll find that you have more control over editing images without loss of information. If you've taken a shot where the exposure is off a bit, it's easier to fix, with RAW files. (Shooting in Jpg+RAW, simply uses up memory on your card faster, stick with RAW all the way and convert to jpg later on)
I also avoid the fully auto settings... if you want to shoot "auto", try using the "p" setting on your camera, all the exposure settings will be auto, but the files will be RAW.
